First PLC Workshop Success Paves Way for New Professional Development Package

Momentum is building as learners at Schaeffler complete the inaugural Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) workshop cohort at the National Fluid Power Centre. With further modules in development, staff will have expanded learning opportunities in the months ahead.

Over one day, participants explored programmable logic controllers while working directly with live equipment. Using specialised systems such as SIEMENS Step 7 or Mitsubishi, they completed practical exercises showing how logic sequences control machinery and fluid power processes. By the end of the session, participants had a clear understanding of the technology and practical skills to support reliable daily operations.

Following this significant milestone, the National Fluid Power Centre is introducing three new modules to further expand on these skills and competencies. Upcoming modules include Sensor Technology, Machine Safety Systems, and Machine Data Management, which are currently in the final stages of development.Together with the initial PLC workshop, these modules will form a comprehensive 12-month professional development programme called Maintenance & Management of Integrated Fluid Power Systems.

New range of training modules include: Programmable Logic Control now available. Under development there are; Sensor Technology, Machine Safety Systems and Machine Data Management

Building on core PLC knowledge, the Sensor Technology module equips learners with the skills to interpret flow, pressure, and position data, helping them identify faults before they escalate. With this knowledge, the Machine Safety Systems module guides participants in applying recognised standards and protective measures, safeguarding staff without interrupting operations. Concluding with Machine Data Management, the module enables learners to capture and analyse operational information, optimising efficiency and driving long-term productivity.
