Rotherham’s Wonderful New Gateway: Plans Progress for Parkgate Railway Station

Rotherham is on track for a major transformation.

Plans for the new Rotherham Gateway railway station at Forge Way, Parkgate have taken a big step forward, thanks to a £11.35 million funding boost approved by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), despite the government’s decision to pause electrification of the Midland Main Line.

For the first time in decades, Rotherham will be directly connected to the mainline rail network, alongside its much-loved Tram Train service. But this isn’t just about trains – it’s about shaping the future of Rotherham.

What Will the New Station Bring?

Imagine stepping onto a modern platform at Parkgate, hopping on a mainline train, and being in Sheffield in minutes, Leeds in under an hour, or Doncaster even faster. That’s the vision behind the Rotherham Gateway station.

A Heart for a Bigger Masterplan

The station will be the centrepiece of the wider Rotherham Gateway Masterplan, a 20-year regeneration programme set to reshape the area around Parkgate. Plans include:

  • Greener spaces and public realm – new parks, trees, and community areas to enjoy.
  • Around 250 new homes, designed with modern living in mind.
  • Commercial and advanced manufacturing spaces – attracting businesses and creating jobs.

Boosting the Local Economy

The project is expected to create over 400 jobs during and after construction, injecting new life into the local economy. From construction roles to opportunities in new businesses attracted by improved transport links, the station is set to be a powerful driver of growth.

Timeline: When Will It Open?

The ambition is clear: The station and its Tram Train stop aim to be fully operational by 2030 or 2031.

Over the next few years, the focus will be on:

  • Detailed design work to shape the final look and feel of the station.
  • Land assembly to secure the plots needed for construction.
  • Community engagement, ensuring local people have a say in how the area evolves.

A Community Gateway

The new Rotherham Gateway station isn’t just about trains, timetables, or tracks – it’s about pride, opportunity, and a new chapter for the town.

When the first trains roll into Parkgate in 2030, they won’t just be carrying passengers; they’ll be carrying Rotherham’s ambition for a stronger, greener, and more connected future.
