From Coal to Classrooms
The Proud History of Dearne Valley College
The story of Dearne Valley College is one of deep community roots, dramatic transformation, and a lasting commitment to education. Looking across our modern campus today, it’s hard to believe that this vibrant hub of learning was once the beating industrial heart of the local coal industry.
Here is how a former colliery site evolved into the institution we know today.
1976: The Foundation
Our journey began half a century ago in 1976, when we were first known as Rockingham College. Established to provide vital skills and education to the local community, the College was founded during an era when the surrounding region relied heavily on the coal mining industry. From the very start, the College’s mission was clear: To support local people, boost employment and provide a gateway to new opportunities.
1996: A New Identity and a £7m Milestone
As the decades rolled on, the college grew alongside the changing landscape of Dearne Valley. By 1996, the institution had taken on a new name: Dearne Valley College.
This was a landmark year for the college. In 1996, we proudly opened our brand-new, purpose-built main college site at Manvers Park, representing a massive £7 million investment in the future of students. This move solidified the college as a forward-thinking, modern environment for further education.

Built on Heritage
The entire Manvers Park campus is built upon a piece of local history – an old colliery (coal mine) site. While the landscape has been completely transformed from industrial mechanics to modern classrooms, we haven’t forgotten where we came from. In fact, history is built right into our infrastructure: Our TTC (Technology Training Centre) building is the original, converted pit office from the old colliery. It stands as a proud, physical bridge between our regions hardworking industrial past and its bright academic future.

2018: Joining the RNN Group
The next major evolution in our history arrived on 1st February 2018, when the College officially became a part of the RNN Group.
Joining the wider education partnership allowed up to pool resources, expand our course offerings, and provide even greater support and facilities for our students. It marked the beginning of a collaborative new chapter, ensuring that the College remains a premier destination for skills, apprenticeships, and higher education in that region.
Today we continue to look forward, welcoming new generations of students through our doors while proudly carrying the heritage of the area in everything we do.
