Helping Your Young Person Prepare for College

RNN Group Taster Day Week Begins w/c 22nd June

As your child prepares to finish their GCSEs and move on to the next stage of their education, you may be wondering how they can feel confident and ready for the transition to college.

That’s where our Taster Day Week, taking place from the week commencing 22nd June, plays an important role.

For students who have applied to Rotherham College, North Notts College or Dearne Valley College, taster sessions provide a valuable opportunity to experience college life before starting their course in September. They are designed to help students feel familiar with their new environment, meet teaching staff and classmates, and gain a better understanding of what to expect when they join us.

Why are Taster Days important?

Moving from school to college is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring questions and uncertainty for both students and parents.

Our taster sessions are designed to make this transition as smooth as possible by allowing students to:

  • Experience their chosen subject area first-hand
  • Meet their future tutors and support teams
  • Explore college facilities and campuses
  • Build friendships with other prospective students
  • Gain confidence ahead of starting in September

By attending a taster session, students can begin to see themselves as part of the college community and feel reassured about the choices they have made for their future.

A chance to experience their chosen course

Parents and carers often want reassurance that their child has selected the right course and environment for their next step.

Taster sessions give students the opportunity to take part in practical activities related to their chosen programme of study. Whether they are interested in engineering, health and social care, construction, digital technologies, creative arts, animal care, sport or business, they will get a genuine insight into how they will learn at college.

Experiencing the course before enrolment can help students feel more motivated and excited about their future studies.

Building confidence before September

Starting somewhere new can feel daunting. One of the biggest benefits of attending a taster day is helping students become familiar with their new surroundings before their first official day.

By exploring the campus, finding key facilities and meeting members of staff, students often arrive in September feeling more comfortable and prepared.

For parents and carers, this can provide peace of mind that your young person is beginning their college journey with confidence.

Supporting your young person’s next steps

At the RNN Group, we understand that choosing the right college is an important decision for the whole family. Our taster sessions are designed to support students as they take this exciting step towards further education, training and future careers.

We encourage all applicants to attend a taster session and make the most of this opportunity to experience college life before the new academic year begins.
