Rotherham is Wonderful: Rotherham 2036

Why Collaboration Will Define the Borough’s Next Decade

Across the UK, communities are facing a common challenge: How do we create places where people can not only live, but truly thrive?

For Rotherham, the answer lies in partnership, shared ambition, and a long-term vision for change.

In June 2026, the Rotherham Together Partnership reflected on its former plan and the many achievements and launched its new plan for the next decade.

The newly developed Rotherham Plan 2026-2036 sets out an ambitious roadmap for the next decade, bringing together organisations from across the borough around a common purpose – to improve lives, reduce inequalities, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for future generations.

At a time when public services face increasing pressures and communities continue to navigate economic and social challenges, the plan offers something particularly valuable: A collective vision for the future.

Looking Beyond Short-Term Challenges

Too often, strategic planning can become focused on immediate pressures. While these challenges cannot be ignored, the Rotherham Plan takes a broader perspective.

It asks an important question: What kind of place do we want Rotherham to be in ten years’ time?

The answer is a borough where people enjoy better health and wellbeing, where businesses can grow and innovate, where young people have opportunities to succeed, and where communities feel connected, resilient, and proud of where they live.

This vision recognises that economic success and social wellbeing are deeply connected. Growth alone is not enough. The real measure of success is whether that growth improves outcomes for residents and creates opportunities that are accessible to everyone.

Why Partnership Matters More Than Ever

One of the most significant strengths of the Rotherham Plan is that it is not owned by a single organisation.

It reflects the shared commitment of partners across local government, health services, education, policing, businesses, and the voluntary and community sector.

No single organisation can solve complex challenges alone.

Issues such as health inequalities, economic inactivity, skills development, community safety, and environmental sustainability cut across traditional organisational boundaries. Addressing them requires collaboration, shared leadership, and a willingness to work differently.

The Rotherham Together Partnership recognises this reality. By aligning priorities and resources, partners can deliver greater impact than any individual organisation working in isolation.

The Importance of the Game Changers

At the heart of the plan are four strategic “Game Changers” – areas identified as having the greatest potential to accelerate positive change across the borough.

These Game Changers represent more than individual projects or initiatives. They are catalysts for transformation.

Their purpose is to focus attention, investment, innovation, and collective action on areas that can unlock wider benefits for residents and communities.

This approach reflects a growing understanding across the public sector that meaningful change often comes from concentrating efforts on a small number of high-impact priorities rather than attempting to tackle everything at once.

The challenge now is turning these ambitions into practical action that delivers measurable outcomes over the coming years.

Creating a Borough of Opportunity

The most compelling aspect of the Rotherham Plan is its emphasis on opportunity.

Opportunity for children and young people.

Opportunity for people seeking employment and skills development.

Opportunity for businesses to grow and invest.

Opportunity for communities to shape their own futures.

And importantly, opportunity for those who have historically faced barriers that have limited their life chances.

The plan acknowledges that reducing inequalities is not simply about addressing disadvantage – it is about ensuring that everyone can benefit from the borough’s future success.

From Vision to Reality

A vision is only meaningful if it leads to action.

The next decade will require sustained commitment from partners, residents, businesses, and community organisations. Success will depend not only on investment and policy but also on continued collaboration and accountability.

The Rotherham Plan provides a framework for that journey.

It offers a clear direction of travel while recognising that transformation is a shared responsibility.

As Rotherham looks towards 2036, there is an opportunity to build on the borough’s strengths, embrace innovation, and create lasting change for future generations.

The vision is ambitious.

The challenges are real.

But with strong partnerships, shared leadership, and a collective commitment to improving outcomes, Rotherham has the foundations to make the next decade one of its most successful yet.
